Discovery delivered — proposal with them

Snapshot

What they do

A Managing General Underwriter specialising in cannabis insurance. They underwrite policies on behalf of carriers and distribute through a nationwide network of independent insurance agents.

Where this stands

Discovery is complete and the findings have been delivered. A proposal is with them.

The relationship

Where they started

Fifteen years in business, and adopting a formal CRM for the first time. An earlier implementation had begun and then stalled, which meant the platform they were meant to be running on had become the thing standing in their way.

The root of it was structural rather than behavioural. Policies and the companies that held them had been modelled as though they were the same kind of thing, and records were showing numbers in places where names belonged. The team had been trained and were willing — and were blocked by a data model that could not carry what they needed it to.

What we delivered

  • A discovery session with the leadership who make the decisions, held before any recommendation was made
  • A written diagnosis of the underlying problem and a recommended way forward
  • A benchmark of the current team against the roles a working platform actually requires
  • An assessment of the gap between the training the team received and what they were able to do with it

What changed

They arrived describing a tool that would not do what they needed. They came out of it with a specific, named diagnosis — the way policies and companies had been modelled — and that is a problem someone can actually fix, where a broken tool is not.

The platform also stopped being understood as somewhere marketing and sales keep their records, and started being understood as the system the whole business runs on. That reframing changed which questions they thought were worth asking of it.

In a sentence

Fifteen years in business, adopting a CRM for the first time, and stuck — and what unstuck it was naming the data model underneath as the problem, rather than the tool sitting on top of it.
